Colonel Dye, Dover AFB, Delaware, 1969
After I got back to Dover AFB, word came down that our unit at Bien Hoa had been awarded the U.S. Air Force Commendation Medal. We all got together with Colonel Dye to receive our medals and to have our picture taken. Colonel Dye is the last man on the right side of this photo.
I included this picture because I wanted you to see what a real officer looks like. They do exist, but you don't encounter them very often. Colonel Dye was the only true officer that I ran across during my time in the U.S. Air Force. Oh, there were lots of men that the Air Force called "officers," and I had to salute them and take orders from them. However, this man actually measured up to the title of "officer."
