Headquarters Bien Hoa AB
Bien Hoa Air Base was under the joint command of both Vietnamese and American officers. Their headquarters was located in this building. I don't remember the American base commander's name, but he seemed like a nice guy. One day he was driving across the East Ramp, and he saw me as I was picking up pieces of shrapnel from the taxiway and throwing them over into the weeds, where aircraft wouldn't run over them. I guess he appreciated what I was doing, because he stopped and offered me a ride in his bullet and shrapnel riddled car. I declined because I only had a short way to go, but I'll always remember his offer. It isn't every day that a full colonel offers a ride to a two-stripe airman.
