East Ramp Office on a Sunny Day
Here's the East Ramp office on a nice sunny day. The low building to the right is the latrine. I think it had six stalls, but usually five of them didn't work. The large building in the background is a hanger for the U-2 aircraft stationed at Bien Hoa. It was a favorite target for the VC whenever they fired rockets and mortars at the base. Behind our office is a sandbag bunker that we used on those occasions.
One day we came under attack, and we all got into the bunker. An army man, who just happened to be on our ramp at the time, joined us. He looked at the bunker and announced to everyone inside that it didn't offer much protection at all. I told him, "In that case, you won't mind going outside to make more room for the rest of us." He didn't seem interested. We never heard another peep out of him.
