Gulf Coast Highway, Biloxi, Mississippi

My service in the U.S. Air Force started on January 24, 1966. I flew with about 20 other men from the Des Moines airport to San Antonio for basic training, which at that time, lasted eight weeks. I don't have any photos of the facility or Lackland AFB because we weren't allowed to have cameras during basic training.

After boot camp, I rode on a bus to Keesler AFB in Biloxi, Mississippi, to undergo technical training in Morse code. This was the view as we got close to the base. It looks pretty desolate, but I really liked the area. Most of the Mississippi residents that I met were very friendly and helpful. I can't say the same thing about some of the Air Force personnel.
