January 31, 1968
For the first five months I was in Vietnam, Bien Hoa never came under attack. All of that changed at around 2 AM on the morning of January 31, 1968. That was the beginning of the Tet Offensive at Bien Hoa. In the next set of pictures, I'll show you some of what happened that day.
In this photo you can see a fire that was started when one of the rockets landed behind the passenger terminal. I don't think anyone was hurt. This photo was taken shortly after the rocket attack stopped and while the Viet Cong were attempting to overrun the east end of the base. Our forces were already dropping flares over the west end of Bien Hoa to look for attackers there, but luckily for us the VC didn't come from that direction.
